Crossing Open Ground, by environmentalist composer John Luther Adams, is an outdoor work for winds, brass, and percussion—a living framework for re-encountering place. Each iteration is developed in direct dialogue with its environment, from a natural amphitheater in the American Southwest to the open terrains of the Berkshires, allowing the land itself to shape the experience of sound and movement.
Guided by Adams, Chamblas, Nordstrum, and conductor (Nadia Sirota, Utah; Christopher Rountree, Tanglewood), an acoustic ensemble of local musicians and section leads are distributed across a landscape. Audiences are invited to move freely, choosing their own path through the work. There is no fixed vantage point and no single narrative; instead, the piece unfolds as a shared field of attention, where listening becomes physical and spatial.
Across contexts, Crossing Open Ground reflects BODY LIVE LIVE MUSIC’s core approach: creating works that are at once rigorous and open, grounded in collaboration, and designed to transform how audiences gather, listen, and experience space together.
